Volcanoes of Kamchatka. Mutnovski Volcano

Mutnovski Volcano The volcano Mutnovski is situated in 70 km to the south from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski, in the South Kamchatka volcanic chain. The absolute height of the volcano is 2323m, the relative height – 1500m. The volcano in its’ construction is a complicated volcanic building.

The massif in the whole consists of four cones of strato-volcanoes.

The eastern part is a double volcano, in the northern sector a part of old building and most of young cone have been destroyed. In this part from time to time persists a deep hollow, strongly inclined in the direction of Falshivaya River valley and filled with ice, melting and breaking influenced by hot fumarils.

The active hollow locates in the western edge of main crater of Mutnovski Volcano. The hollow is oval 440õ100 m, the depth is 180 meters.

The worth place to visit is the canyon Opasniy with a waterfall (53 m) in its’ upper part, formed by Mutnaya River emerging from Munovski Volcano.

The volcano often reminds people of its’ activity, releasing a column of steam and gas up. This “hard worker” has got the most extended fields of fumarols. There can be seen the outcomes of native sulphur, a lot of mud pots. Near the Vulkannaya River one can see crystallizing minerals of markazit, sulphur and many others. The river cuts the bottom and the western edge of the northern crater and creates a powerful waterfall at last, falling in a deep canyon – Opasniy (Dangerous). The canyon and the waterfall make original esthetic value of the volcano, what, summarily with the other characteristics, makes the volcano listed into the outstanding memorials of nature in the world.
