Volcanoes of Kamchatka

Print version Print version

Map of KamchatkaKamchatka Peninsula is a part of Kuril-Kamchatkan volcanic archipelago complex rim, bearing two principle volcanic chains: Mediate and  Eastern.

It is assumed to be in Kamchatka  29 active volcanoes, demonstrating an intense volcanic processes. The average absolute height  of active volcanoes in Kamchatka  is 2450 m.

Beside the active volcanoes a lot of various extinct volcanoes, formed in  Quaternary    Period during last 700-800 thousand years, more or less destroyed is widely spread in Kamchatka. These relatively big volcanoes are in the number about 270.  Side by side with relatively big volcanoes there were formed more than  2600 small volcanic constructions of slag or lava cones for recent 10 thousand years.  Thus, the total number of all volcanic objects in Kamchatka is 3000 approximately.

Mediate Volcanic Chain

This volcanic chain is the most ancient. It occupies the mediate part of  Kamchatka and is represented by the volcanoes:  Alney, Bolshoy, Big and Small Keterana, Kebekey, Tigilsky, Uksitchan, Khangar and many others. There are 120 them or so in the total. The other volcanic objects are not high slag/lava cones and various flows of hardened lava, taking huge squares. There are more than 1000 them.

Ichinsky Volcano takes especial place, this is the highest and the only active volcano in the Mediate volcanic  chain.

Eastern Volcanic Chain

Eastern Volcanic Chain is separated from Mediate V. Ch. with the Central Kamchatka Lowland and can be  traced from the area of Avachinskaya Bay in the South and up to Shivelutsh Volcano in the North. In the total there are 28 active and about 150 extinct volcanoes in this chain. The volcanoes are situated by the groups or rows of different length.
