Kamchatka. Bakening Volcano |
|
The Bakening Volcano is a specific watershed between three largest rivers of Kamchatka Peninsula, crossing it in opposite directions: Kamchatka R., Avacha and Bystraya. A wide hollow, bounded with mountains, was the place of formation of Bakening. This volcano raised as a result of consequent flows of lava from the central crater. Strong eruptions conglomerated lava a layer after layer until there has been formed the cone about 1,5 km in the height. On active forming the volcano a long period of stagnation began, when in the course the top has been eroded and the slopes have been cut through with deep canyons. These destructions were caused by precipitations and winds. An earthquake at the northern part of foot of Bakening caused forming two wide craters. Than, new cones raised from these craters and huge flows of lava have been spilled around. The rocky conglomerates of lava formed a high black cone of Novo-Bakening.
In the case of nice weather one can see from the top of Bakening a scenery panorama to the Avachinskaya volcanic group, Zhupanovsky and Kronotsky Volcanos. There are six mountain lakes down the slopes of Bakening: Dalneye (Far), Medvezhye (Bear), Verkhneye (Upper), Avachinskoye, Vysokoye (High) and Maluye (small) Lakes. Huge flows of hardened lava are situated to the North-East from Novo-Bakening Volcano.
At the top of Bakening inside the semi-destroyed crater there is a high vertical obelisk rock, which was squeezed out from the earth in the course of the last eruption of the volcano and got hardened as a giant memorial.
